Red maple is a bad companion plant, inhibiting the growth of nearby plants. A fast-growing tree for the first 20 - 30years of its life, it may live for 75 - 100 years. Prefers a sunny position but tolerates some shade. Dislikes chalk according to one report, whilst others say that it does less well on chalk, often becoming chlorotic as a result of iron deficiency. Of easy cultivation, it prefers a good moist well-drained soil, though this species succeeds in wetter soils than most other members of the genus. Landscape Uses:Firewood, Aggressive surface roots possible, Specimen, Street tree, Woodland garden. Self-sown seedlings, gathered in early spring, are eaten fresh or dried for later use. It is dried, ground into a powder and then used as a thickening in soups etc or mixed with cereals when making bread. The best sap production comes from cold-winter areas with continental climates. It can be harvested in late winter, the flow is best on warm sunny days following a frost. It makes a good maple syrup although the yield is comparatively small. This species only yields about half the quantity obtained from the sugar maple (A. The syrup is used as a sweetener on many foods. It was subsequently introduced into commerce in 1995.The sap contains sugar and this can be used as a drink or be concentrated into a syrup by boiling off the water. 'Brandywine' is the result of a 1982 cross ( Acer rubrum 'October Glory' x Acer rubrum 'Autumn flame') conducted as part of a U. Fall color is more intense with more consistent quality red foliage color from year to year than what is typically found on species plants. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet that gradually turns reddish-purple. Leaves (to 4 1/2” long) with 3-5 lobes are green above and glaucous green with a blue-gray bloom beneath. ‘Brandywine' is a male selection (seedless) that typically grows to 25' tall over the first 12 years, eventually maturing over time to 35-50' tall. Specific epithet of rubrum meaning red is everywhere in evidence: red flowers in dense clusters in late March to early April (before the leaves appear), red fruit (initially reddish, two-winged samara), reddish stems and twigs, red buds, and, in the fall, excellent orange-red foliage color. Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree. Flowers on a given tree are primarily male or female or monoecious and appear in late winter to early spring (March-April) before the leaves. Leaves are medium to dark green above and gray green below. Lobes have toothed margins and pointed tips. Leaves (to 2-5" long) have 3 principal triangular lobes (sometimes 5 lobes with the two lower lobes being largely suppressed). Quality of red fall color on species plants is variable. Emerging new growth leaves, leafstalks, twigs, flowers, fruit and fall color are red or tinged with red. In northern states, red maple usually occurs in wet bottomland, river flood plains and wet woods, but in Missouri it typically frequents drier, rocky upland areas. It grows faster than Norway and sugar maples, but slower than silver maple. It typically grows 40-60’ tall with a rounded to oval crown. Acer rubrum, commonly called red maple, is a medium-sized, deciduous tree that is native to Eastern North America from Quebec to Minnesota south to Florida and eastern Texas.
